چکیده

We show that for any constant ∆ ≥ 2, there exists a graph Γ with O(n) vertices which contains every n-vertex graph with maximum degree ∆ as an induced subgraph. For odd ∆ this significantly improves the best-known earlier bound of Esperet et al. and is optimal up to a constant factor, as it is known that any such graph must have at least Ω(n) vertices. Our proof builds on the approach of Alon and Capalbo (SODA 2008) together with several additional ingredients. The construction of Γ is explicit and is based on an appropriately defined composition of high-girth expander graphs. The proof also provides an efficient deterministic procedure for finding, for any given input graph H on n vertices with maximum degree at most ∆, an induced subgraph of Γ isomorphic to H.

k-forested choosability of graphs with bounded maximum average degree

A proper vertex coloring of a simple graph is $k$-forested if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest with maximum degree less than $k$. A graph is $k$-forested $q$-choosable if for a given list of $q$ colors associated with each vertex $v$, there exists a $k$-forested coloring of $G$ such that each vertex receives a color from its own list. In this paper, we prov...

Induced-Universal Graphs for Graphs with Bounded Maximum Degree

For a family F of graphs, a graph U is induced-universal for F if every graph in F is an induced subgraph of U . We give a construction for an induceduniversal graph for the family of graphs on n vertices with degree at most r, which has Cnb(r+1)/2c vertices and Dn2b(r+1)/2c−1 edges, where C and D are constants depending only on r. This construction is nearly optimal when r is even in that such...

Universal Graphs for Bounded-Degree Trees and Planar Graphs

How small can a graph be that contains as subgraphs all trees on n vertices with maximum degree d? In this paper, this question is answered by constructing such universal graphs that have n vertices and bounded degree (depending only on d). Universal graphs with n vertices and O(n log n) edges are also constructed that contain all bounded-degree planar graphs on n vertices as subgraphs. In gene...

On Universal Hypergraphs

A hypergraph H is called universal for a family F of hypergraphs, if it contains every hypergraph F ∈ F as a copy. For the family of r-uniform hypergraphs with maximum vertex degree bounded by ∆ and at most n vertices any universal hypergraph has to contain Ω(nr−r/∆) many edges. We exploit constructions of Alon and Capalbo to obtain universal r-uniform hypergraphs with the optimal number of edg...

Near-Optimal Induced Universal Graphs for Bounded Degree Graphs

A graph U is an induced universal graph for a family F of graphs if every graph in F is a vertex-induced subgraph of U . For the family of all undirected graphs on n vertices Alstrup, Kaplan, Thorup, and Zwick [STOC 2015] give an induced universal graph with O ( 2n/2 ) vertices, matching a lower bound by Moon [Proc. of Glasgow Math. Association 1965]. Let k = dD/2e. Improving asymptotically on ...
